Twitter is an online news and social networking service
where users post and interact with messages called tweets. Twitter is the
fastest way to get real time information from around the world. It’s much like
a newspaper that automatically updates as new stories occur. Tweets themselves are
short and sweet, like newspaper headlines but unlike a newspaper you choose
what articles appear by following accounts that interest you. If you’re
watching sports on TV, using twitter can give you a whole new perspective on
the game. By following athletes, journalists or people behind the scenes, you
can get perspectives and access you can’t find anywhere else. The same is true
for politics, news, music and even your friends and family. You don’t have to
read everything that gets tweeted. You can just check your timeline when it’s convenient
while you commuting or waiting in line. In just a few seconds twitter can get
you updated on everything that’s happening.
Whether you like books, bicycling or basketball, twitter
brings you closer in real-time to what matters most. All you have to do is grab
your phone. Hashtags are tools commonly used to group things, topics and or
similar events together so their easily accessible. Its creates a sort of
online community where people with similar interests gather to obtain similar news.
Although hashtags are not used on twitter alone, its use have gotten extremely popularity
due to “trends” that are available for your viewing pleasure. A trend on
twitter refers to a hash-tag driven topic that is immediately popular at a
given time. Many brands are promoting themselves using hashtags to grow their engagement
with their customers. It’s a way to throw your brand into online conversations
which then allows you to chime in on the shareable moments your brand has with
its customers. For example, by just searching the hashtag “Wendy’s” you will be
bombarded with information, news, topics and events people have shared about
the food franchise. Personal events from the food they’ve eaten to what
happened in front of Wendy’s in Times square this evening. You will not only
get the good but the bad and the ugly as well. That’s what makes this platform
great. It’s personal and yet impersonal at the same time. Twitter is not a
platform that caters to just one point of view but to all perspectives. Its
tool that allows use to look at something objectively from all angles.
Twitter is different that blogging and other social media
platforms because your personally connected to a vast amount of content and
profiles. I can literally comment and speak to people who I’ve seen on TV. It’s
very interactive and makes it seem as if were friends even though were not. We
get insight into their thoughts and opinions as if we know them personally.
I chose to follow AMC movie theatres and Complex sneakers
because I’m interested in sneakers and new movie releases. I also chose to
follow Arizona iced tea because I would probably never do that in real life. I don’t
really care about Arizona tea news but it thought it’d be interesting to learn
about.
Recently was the opening for the MLB (April 2nd),
PGA master tournament (April 6th) and NFL draft (April 27th)
as well. This is a huge day for baseball fans because they get to cheer their
team on to victory once again. For the fans of golf, it served the same
purpose. Although golf is a one man sport it is excited to see who’s up next at
becoming champion. For football fans it’s exciting to see which new rookie gets
the opportunity to play nationally. This only happens once a year so were all
excited to see what happens. Following the opening day Twitter was bombarded
with pictures, of rosters, stats, personal news about players and coaches and
more. These events will continue to trend as long as the season lasts which is approximately
7 to 8 months. Twitter is always successful when it comes to events like these
because fans of any specific sport can tune in to what’s going on in real time.
For each event, pictures, photos, videos and more were in rotation causing new
trends and fans to be created simultaneously.
Twitter has also been used beyond socializing and marketing purposes.
Twitter has also become a tool used to get first hand news and information about
disasters and catastrophes that occur worldwide. During the Boston marathon explosions
friends and families who were there to witness documented their first-hand
experience. They used their phones, pictures, soundbites, reactions to inform
others. Instead of voices being filtered through new outlets and people with
their own agendas we can get an unbiased perception of events.
“the funnel is the journalist. And the funnel ‘s job is to
take all the information from the crazy and the correct, and pour it, with a
measure of control, into the story. Take out the impurities, crush up the lumps,
and make the resulting article a distillation of the thousands of snippets,
with no errors.” However, the unfiltered information is the realest thing we
get to the truth.
This can be good and bad because although its honest and
real to one, during times of fear or stress biases are often showed which can
also give an inaccurate description of an event. “Sometimes I think perhaps I’m
old fashioned and prefer to get my news when its verified. When it’s been
through the funnel. When people who are trained take the time to consider and contextualize
and commentate” Overall Twitter has more purposes than one. Not only as a means
to make money but as a means to inform and teach as well.
Twitter can and often is used as a political tool. During
elections there are constant memes, articles, stories in circulation about
running candidates. Twitter is all fun and games if you chose to follow those characters.
To other people twitter is a very professional and informative tool. We can get
updates on presidential campaigns and even gain knowledge about opposing
parties. This is good because people can learn to think and consider other
perspectives other than their own. Twitter is not just limited to America but
other political campaigns that occur worldwide. There are journalists
everywhere and they all have stories to tell. Weather there in Saudi Arabia, Africa,
Russia etc. Twitter is a global tool. Instead of reading off of bias sites we
can go directly to the source and see for ourselves. It is still the internet
so we need to take all information in with a grain of salt but twitter makes
the world a bit smaller with information at your disposal.
In conclusion, twitter is a worldwide platform that is necessary
in today’s day and age. It is useful not only in marking and promotional
campaigns but also in political and journalism too. It’s a tool that allows us
to see over each side of the fence and see others peoples point of view.
