The Internet as we know it today has changed drastically since my first discovery of it. When I first discovered the internet it was a big deal. Everyone didn’t have one in their households like we do now. Logging on to the internet was a task. It took between five to ten minutes to finally be connected. While we waited, we were accosted by the loudest, most annoying screeching noise you’ve ever heard. There were often freezes and glitches but it’s understandable since it was a fairly new addition to technology. Regardless, the internet was full of discoveries. For the first time ever, you didn’t need to go to the library and rent a book out of such a limited choice selection. Google, Ask Jeeves, Lycos and other various search engines became my best friends. It was amazing. I could ask any question in the world and receive an accurate and plausible answer. To a young kid that’s beginning to question the world around him, it a blessing to me, my parents and siblings. As I got older and became interested girls and friends, social media made its way into my life. Myspace was a world of itself. For the first time ever people from down the block, across the state and around the world could gather in one place and communicate personally. Myspace was a place you could express yourself, your personality, preferences, likes and dislikes. It was an open stage for anyone to join as long as you accepted his or her friend request. On my birthday I was showered with comments, gifs and pictures from friends and family. All down my comment section was love and it was much appreciated. Social media was the only popular tool where we didn’t have to gather personally to exchange personal wishes. The future for social media is even brighter now. Perhaps in the year 2020 we will be able to walk hand in hand with someone virtually. A real virtual café! Since I’ve first used social media, the capabilities have improved tremendously. There are emoji’s that depict our feeling in a single icon. You can like, dislike, share and edit your profile in ways that celebrate your specific style. Aside from the gilts and glamor, social media hasn’t changed too much. Social media has the potential to be intrusive, however with privacy settings you can easily choose what you wish to see and not see. When I had an Instagram, I followed people that I knew or pages I was inspired by. I didn’t see what I didn’t want to see. I think there’s a responsibility to using social media if you choose to be responsible. There’s no rule that says you need to be responsible on social media. It’s a free platform that can open your eyes to an assortment of things. It’s made for fun. However, In my case, I’d choose to be responsible since future employers could be looking to discover who you are behind closed doors.
Peer pressure is the social pressure by members of one’s peer group to take a certain action, adopt certain values or otherwise conform in order to be accepted. All over the world people are coerced into doing things that they otherwise would not. Since we were children, we’ve all dealt with peer pressure in one form or another. It can vary from the consumption of alcohol to being pressured to act in ways that you otherwise would not. The pressures from our parents and families can help us to adopt positive habits and values whereas friends can be bad influences and lead us to adopt negative habits. When your pressured to go against your internal feelings of morality and ethics in order to be accepted within a group, it can be detrimental. However, the same pressure that forces you out of your comfort zones can also lead us to discovering new talents, loves, passions and even discoveries about ourselves. There was an old saying that said “Nothing amazing was ever created from inside c...
