The experience of creating a Wiki How post was exciting and filled with learning lessons. The
skills learnt from this project can easily be used in future occupations. Wiki How is an online
community with a vast variety of how-to- guides. The chosen topic was about meditation.
Specifically, it was about how to meditate in a loud place. This topic is important because it can
promote mental wellness, joy, peace, clear thoughts, effective action and more. It’s a useful
skill to learn. In todays day and age, the world can be hectic and fill people with worry.
Meditation is an excellent tool to separate oneself from worrisome situations or any
circumstance that may cause distress. Distress comes in many forms such as aggravation,
boredom, jealousy, bitterness and an array of other emotions. It can be difficult to calm your
mind when filled with anxiety. Meditation is basically the process of turning down the endless
cycle of internal chatter within the mind. Our thoughts shape our reality. A sustained negative
thought can keep one in a mad mood for a very long time. The problem with human beings is
that we think we have an extremely accurate idea of what is perceived around us. The truth is
that we actually don’t have best interpretation of things. According to Mark Leary, professor of
psychology at Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina “Your ideas about what
others think of you hinge on your self-concept—your own beliefs about who you are. You filter
the cues that you get from others through your self concept.” People are filled with their own
preconceptions, ideologies, habits, insecurities and more. Sometimes what you perceive as an
attitude or deliberate action towards you is actually a way they may deal with stress. We may
think it’s personal but it hardly anything ever is. It may appear that way on the surface but our
perception may be skewed as well. That’s why it is important to center your mind and look at
things objectively. Everything is not what it appears to be but with a sound mind we can see life
more clearly. The Buddha once said “We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we
think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.” Humans are gifted
with consciousness that enables us to perceive, understand and remember the pit falls we may
have stumbled in at one point in our lives. In an effort to keep you safe and not make the same
mistake twice, our mind shapes our reality in a way that aims to protect us from harm. There is
a scientific reason why feelings are so hard to shake. The mind is there to protect us/ However,
the anxiety can sometimes be unrealistic and just a figment of the imagination. Peace can only
come from within and mediation get us more in touch with our self, who we really are, not
whom we perceive ourselves to be. “Meditation isn’t to disappear into the light. Meditation is
to see all of what we are.” – Stephan Levine.
My wiki project was interesting. In order for me to create the illusion of peace and separation
from the perceived reality I had to learn how to create an outer glow. I learned to crop a figure
out of one place and put him in another. With the help of some crafty Photoshop work, a man
was put in the middle of a noisy environment. While the man’s aura glows brighter as he travels
deeper into the mediation, the background around him begins to fade. This indicates the
separation between the situation and your mind. When your mind is still, you can be at peace.
The first step in mediation is to close your eyes, let your mind free and trust in the present
moment. A moment of mental rest is necessary. Just like our muscles get fatigued and tired, so
does the mind. The next step is to breathe deeply and pay close attention to each breath. The
subject’s chest is expanded with air in order to indicate deep breathing. Staying in the present
moment is key and getting in touch with your senses is best way to stay there. Step three is to
relax and watch your thoughts patiently and with non-judgement. The thought bubble coming
from his head is purposely empty in order to indicate stillness and tranquility. Just let it flow. It
will begin to become evident that the mind is a bit twisted. It jumps from one thing to the next,
like a computer that needs repair. If you’re not in control if your thoughts then why judge
yourself and other so harshly? Were all the same people looking for peace and love. It’s just
that our methods to get there are different. Step Four is to pay close attention to the sounds
heard around you. Once again, grounding you in the present moment. The world begins to
become beautiful when you lose the thought that you think you know it all. Life regains its
sense of wonder when you let go. The last and final step is to tune into your body and feel the
energy that is alive within. You are a living being that is infinitely more powerful than what you
perceive yourself to be. It’s amazing the blessings that we overlook when entangled in the
mind. With practice and repetition, we will be able to think not only with the mind but with a
force of nature that is infinitely greater than anything you’ve ever imagined. Some people say
its God operating through you. Others say, your third eye is open. One thing for sure is that
whatever it is, is Inside of you all along. The peace, the joy, the confidence, the bliss is all within
your grasp if you can manage to stay out of your own way.
“The don’t have control your thoughts, you just have to stop letting them control you.”
